Carbon-14 cannot be used to date biological artifacts of organisms that did not get their carbon dioxide from the air.

The implications of pervasive contamination and ancient variations in carbon-14 levels are steadfastly ignored by those who base their argument upon the dates….
While the method cannot be counted on to give good, unequivocal results, the numbers do impress people, and save them the trouble of thinking excessively.
The fossils themselves aren't directly dated, but rather the rock that holds them.
if you know the age of the rock, then you can get a ball park figure of the age of the fossil.
Generally, though, a rock will be dated (these will all be sedimentary rocks) somewhere on the planet, or in enough places as to narrow down the date, then with that knowledge in hand, if you find that same layer of rock elsewhere on the planet, and you find a fossil in it - since you already know a rough age for the rock, you have an age for the fossil.
Note that the exact materials used to radiometrically date rock varies with the most useful isotope - there is a link below (the last one) which will explain what I mean.

The older a sample is, the less (the period of time after which half of a given sample will have decayed) is about 5,730 years, the oldest dates that can be reliably measured by this process date to around 50,000 years ago, although special preparation methods occasionally permit accurate analysis of older samples.
